OVERVIEW

TimeBrush Studios is the world's premiere facility for motion video and film colorization - specializing in the revival of monochromatic classics, such as black & white movies, sitcoms, sport/ news documentaries, and music videos - or color restoration and editing in poor quality/ damaged recordings of yester-years.

TimeBrush Studios make use of the the revolutionary and fully digital colorization technologies - TimeBrush RealLifeColour™ and TimeBrush AutoColour™. These technologies were designed from the ground-up specifically for colorizing monochromatic  motion pictures, and provide an unprecedented rendering quality for the lowest dollar value. This technological edge combined with the talents of its research and creative teams, can breath new life into any classic program, reviving it into a prime-time event.

TimeBrush Quality Difference

TimeBrush Studios is the first completely digital facility, dedicated to colorizing motion video. Because colorization is our specialty, we do it better than anyone else. TimeBrush technologies overcome the limitations of earlier colorization attempts. Several  years' of R & D effort has culminated into this synergetic, and fully integrated digital colorization system.

Forget the programs colorized using 1980s' /90s' technologies; TimeBrush Colorization means: no more dull/ faded colors; no more color-trails; no more color inconsistencies across frames. This is colorization as you have never experienced before. Its virtually as if the original recording had always existed in color! TimeBrush'ed sample recordings have been critiqued by industry veterans, and have been held to be of the highest standards ever seen.

TimeBrush Service Difference

TimeBrush recognizes that it takes much more than colorization to produce a brilliant piece of art. This is reflected in our simple and unassuming service model: our Clients who own the copyright to an original content, and have it colorized by us, may pay only a fixed fee, and no more; the original, as well as the colorized program remain the Client's property.

Alternately, TimeBrush Studios also offer service options based on subsidized price, in return for sharing in the royalties/ copyright/ ownership/ of the colorized content.

TimeBrush Technology Difference

While the TimeBrush process is flexible to allow for human creative and artistic direction, it can also automatically determine the correct hue, saturation, etc., for natural scene content. This means that TimeBrush'ed recordings closely mimic the 'actual' colors, just as these would have 'looked' in a original color recording. Its almost like restoring a missing dimension in the original recording - one that could not be captured due to technological limitations of the times.

'Digital processing all-the-way' ensures fully saturated colours that look natural, and true to life. A completely 'dedicated and integrated solution' helps us deliver the best price-quality value for our Customers, while ensuring quick turn-around times for contracted projects.

PERSPECTIVE

A Wish...

There is an immense potential entertainment value in re-producing popular monochromatic film stock and video, in real life-like colour.

The main deterrent to this has been a tremendous amount of effort required, in colourizing even a single image to ‘reality grade standards'...

Lights...

      Camera...

            TimeBrush'ed

Imagine all those black & white video recordings dating back to when motion picture recording was invented, till around the early to mid 1970s - the favorite Hollywood Classics, Television Shows, News and Documentaries, Music Video hits, and real footage from the big wars, and sporting events - just to name a few.

Now, imagine all these in fabulous, glorious, colour! Fantasy? Read on...

There is an immense potential entertainment value in re-producing popular monochromatic film stock and video, in real life-like colour. Yet, there’s only a very rare selection that has undergone such a transformation [colourization]. The main deterrent to this has been a tremendous amount of effort required, in colourizing even a single image to ‘reality grade standards’; it could take up hours or even days’ worth of painstaking work by a photo-artist. Multiply this thousands of times - that’s the magnitude of resources that were needed to colour a video of just a few minutes. Even then, the resulting quality would often not be good enough to justify the amount of time, effort, and financial resources consumed in the process....until now!

Come True...

That's where TimeBrush tilts the balance with its revolutionary digital colourization process - making it possible to accomplish video colourization quality, that looks as if the original had in-fact been recorded on colour film!

That's where TimeBrush tilts the balance with its revolutionary digital colourization process - making it possible to accomplish video colourization quality, that is simply outstanding - so good that it looks as if the original had in-fact been recorded on colour film! Even better, obtaining such great results with the TimeBrush colourization process is neither overly expensive, or  time consuming.

For program content owners, copyright holders, and/ or television, cable, or network producers, this means capturing a whole generation of audiences all over again, with the assurance of a success formula that has already been a hit in the past. It's like bringing Ms Marilyn Monroe, or other idols, back to life, especially to star in a brand-new show - what price do you put on that!

The NEED...

Colour looks good...it enhances the presentation, and adds depth to an otherwise monochromatic scene. It highlights certain key characteristics and aspects of a scene, that would otherwise go unnoticed. But most importantly, It is the way nature intended for us to see things!

Is the 'original' black & white content really all that original?

Why convert from black & white to colour? Isn't that distorting the 'real-thing', the ‘classic look’, the ‘originality’? For answers, consider the following:

Are black & white recordings really all that 'original'? Is that how the camera crew saw things back then? Were the 'sets' made up in shades of gray? Were those glorious dresses and scenes all in black & white? And how about the news and events of the time? Did all those happen in Black & White as well? Fact is, these 'originals' are not so original after all; rather, they are a reflection on the limitations of the technology, that existed at that time. Surely, if the Directors, the Producers, and the Photographers of the day had had a choice, they would have opted to 'shoot' in colour instead...

Lets face it - colour looks good. It enhances the presentation, and adds depth to an otherwise monochromatic scene. It highlights certain key characteristics and aspects of a scene, that would otherwise go unnoticed. But most importantly, It is the way nature intended for us to see things!

Research shows that majority of the people will turn off their television sets during the broadcast of a black & white program - especially the younger generation, most of who otherwise feel that some of that 'older stuff' is really 'cool'. The unsurpassed quality of TimeBrush’s colourization, combined with its relatively low cost, now makes it possible to revive popular black & white shows for the program-hungry broadcast and cable networks around the world, and for the mushrooming market in re-mastered classic/ historic program content, distributed through new generation media such as the DVD, and digital/ Hi-Definition Television. Its a whole new industry out there waiting to be conquered.

The Answer...

TimeBrush video colourization process is founded on two proprietary, core technology components: TimeBrush’s RealLifeColour™, and AutoColour™.

"RealLifeColour" uses nature's own colour palettes to deliver absolutely the best, true-to-life colours. It generates smooth colour gradients, based on the characteristics and scene content of the underlying monochrome image, combined with the creative direction of a human operator.

"AutoColour" complements above technology, by providing a mechanism to 'intelligently' apply RealLifeColour palettes of an image [video-frame], across several others comprising a video shot.

"RealLifeColour" uses nature's own colour palettes to deliver absolutely the best, true-to-life colours. It generates smooth colour gradients, based on the characteristics and scene content of the underlying monochrome image, combined with the creative direction of a human operator. It also provides smart tools to consistently, and expeditiously apply these 'natural' palettes to the target image.

Timebrush's Neural Net based technology ensures faithful reconstruction of the colour information - it's like restoring a missing dimension in the original black & white content.

"AutoColour" complements above technology, by providing a mechanism to 'intelligently' apply RealLifeColour palettes of an image [video-frame], across several others comprising a video shot. This is easier said than done - subtle variations such as light, movement, camera shake, pan/ zoom, etc., exist even between consecutive movie frames, making it unrealistic to apply colours of one frame on to another. These problems were demonstrated through some video colourization attempts in the late 1980s’ and the early 1990s’. Typical defects surface in the form of colour trails, inter-mixing of the foreground and background colours, inconsistent colour rendering across a scene, and overall dull, faded, and un-realistic colours. TimeBrush AutoColour overcomes all such problems, and several others.

Together, these technologies form the TimeBrush™ video colourization process, and help us deliver the following benefits for our customers:

  • colour gradations, that closely mimic life's natural colour schemes

  • consistent, smooth colour transitioning within and across scenes

  • fully digital process ensures sharp and vivid colours throughout

  • alternate colour schemes after the first 'run', at a marginal cost

  • automation ensures expeditious processing - projects take-off sooner - and within budget.

Besides colourizing black & white video, the TimeBrush colourization process can also be used to re-colour video that has dull or in-appropriate colours, or to colourize Infra-red [IR] recordings.

The Choice...

TimeBrush provides different grades of colourization, each suited for specific type of program content, and targeting optimal quality/ $ value according to the intended use.

GRADE-P [Prime-time] provides the best value for movies, sitcoms, & other prime-time shows.

GRADE-P [Prime-time] provides the best value for movies, sitcoms, & other prime-time shows. This grade offers the finest TimeBrush colourization quality, and is available for a variety of target media, including DVD/ VHS, D1 Broadcast, Hi-definition, and Projection.

GRADE-D [Documentary] is most suited for colourizing sport/ news archives, documentaries, etc. This processing grade offers significant cost savings over the PRIME-TIME [GRADE-P], and is meant for content that does not require the colourization detail of the higher grade.

TimeBrush's colourization service fees are the most reasonable in the industry for a comparable value. The actual price of doing a colourization project primarily depends upon the size of the project [hours of program content to be colourized], the nature, quality, and content of the source recording, urgency with which the project must be completed [time-frame], and the quality and grade of colourization required [resolution, media, etc].

Neither is the program's ethnicity a pre-qualifier - if anything, some of the regional/ non English classics would make for excellent prime time broadcast material,  or re-mastering on to DVDs, etc., after being revived through the TimeBrush process.

F.A.Q.

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions, and Answers, that may be helpful in your better understanding TimeBrush's colorization service. Please also feel free to communicate with us through the above shown contact points.

How much does it cost to get a video/ Film colourized through TimeBrush?

TimeBrush provides different grades of colourization, each suited for specific type of program content, and targeting optimal quality/ $ value according to the intended use.

GRADE-P [Prime-time] provides the best value for movies, sitcoms, & other prime-time shows. This grade offers the finest TimeBrush colourization quality, and is available for a variety of target media, including DVD/ VHS, D1 Broadcast, Hi-definition Broadcast, and Projection.

GRADE-D [Documentary] is most suited for colourizing sport/ news archives, documentaries, etc. This processing grade offers significant cost savings over the PRIME-TIME [GRADE-P], and is mainly meant for content that does not require the colourization detail level of the higher grade option.

TimeBrush's colourization service fees are the most reasonable in the industry for a comparable value. The actual price of doing a colourization project primarily depends upon the size of the project [hours of program content to be colourized], the nature, quality, and content of the source recording, urgency with which the project must be completed [time-frame], and the quality and grade of colourization required [resolution, target media, etc].

Who owns the TimeBrush’ed (colourized) version of the resulting program?

TimeBrush Customers who own the copyright to an original content, and have it TimeBrush'ed, may pay only a fixed fee, and no more; the original, as well as the colourized program remain the Client's property.

Alternately, TimeBrush Studios also offer service options based on subsidized price, in return for sharing in the royalties/ copyright/ ownership/ of the colorized content.

Can anyone get any program colourized?

TimeBrush will only colourize program content under one or more of the following circumstances being true:

  • The Customer ‘owns’ the program content to be colourized, and provides written authority to TimeBrush;

  • The Customer has the right to modify the said program content through colourization, and has the authority to assign this right to TimeBrush;

  • The original program has fallen into public domain, and that this can be clearly demonstrated.

In any case, TimeBrush has the final discretion on which program content it will colourize.

How long does it take to colourize a show?

The time to execute and deliver a particular colourization project depends upon the processing capacity available at the time of commissioning, and the other projects committed. Under special circumstances TimeBrush can increase the available capacity to be able to meet a challenging deadline. A project delivery schedule is detailed and agreed to between the Customer and TimeBrush, before any work is undertaken and executed.

How are confidentiality and security handled?

TimeBrush is well aware of the prevailing competitive environment in the entertainment industry, and the resulting confidentiality requirements and genuine concerns that its customers might have in this regard. TimeBrush works with a customer and offers the required assurances in this regard. The exact nature of this arrangement varies; for example, a customer may request that a project be kept absolutely secret until the date of its scheduled public release. Closely associated to this is the security aspect. TimeBrush has measures in place to assure its customers against security concerns such as copyright, pilferage, and protection of the Customer’s intellectual property.

Where is the actual colourization done?

The colourization is executed at various TimeBrush studio facilities across the world. The precise location of these facilities is closely guarded in order to address the security concerns explained above.
